Dutch Question Words (A1)

These words are used to ask for specific information (not just yes/no).

The most common ones at A1 level are:

  • Wie? = Who?
  • Wie is dat? (Who is that?)
  • Wie spreekt Nederlands? (Who speaks Dutch?)
  • Wat? = What?
  • Wat eet je? (What are you eating?)
  • Wat is jouw naam? (What is your name?)
  • Waar? = Where?
  • Waar woon je? (Where do you live?)
  • Waar is het station? (Where is the station?)
  • Wanneer? = When?
  • Wanneer kom je? (When are you coming?)
  • Wanneer is de les? (When is the lesson?)
  • Hoe? = How?
  • Hoe gaat het? (How are you? / How is it going?)
  • Hoe heet je? (How are you called? / What is your name?)
  • Hoe oud ben je? (How old are you?)
  • Waarom? = Why?
  • Waarom leer je Nederlands? (Why are you learning Dutch?)
  • Welke? = Which? / What?
  • Used before a noun.
  • Welke talen spreek je? (Which languages do you speak?)
  • Welke bus gaat naar het centrum? (Which bus goes to the center?)

Remember the word order: Question Word - Verb - Subject - (Rest)?
