Demonstrative Pronouns (dit, dat, deze, die) (A1)

These words point out specific nouns ("this one", "that one", "these", "those").

They depend on two things:

  1. Distance: Is it close (dit/deze) or far (dat/die)?
  2. Noun Type: Is the noun singular het, singular de, or plural?

The Rules:

  • Close By:
  • Singular het noun: dit (this)
  • Dit huis is mooi. (This house is beautiful.)
  • Wat is dit? (What is this?)
  • Singular de noun OR Plural noun: deze (this / these)
  • Deze fiets is nieuw. (This bicycle is new.)
  • Deze boeken zijn oud. (These books are old.)
  • Far Away:
  • Singular het noun: dat (that)
  • Dat huis is groot. (That house is big.)
  • Wat is dat? (What is that?)
  • Singular de noun OR Plural noun: die (that / those)
  • Die auto is snel. (That car is fast.)
  • Die mensen zijn lang. (Those people are tall.)
