Dutch Personal Pronouns (Subject) (A1)

These words replace nouns (people/things) that are the subject of the verb (the one doing the action).

  • ik = I
  • jij / je = you (singular, informal)
  • Use jij for emphasis, je is more common/neutral.
  • u = you (singular or plural, formal)
  • Use u when talking to strangers, older people, officials, or anyone you want to show respect to.
  • hij = he
  • zij / ze = she
  • Use zij for emphasis, ze is more common/neutral.
  • het = it (used for 'het' nouns)
  • wij / we = we
  • Use wij for emphasis, we is more common/neutral.
  • jullie = you (plural, informal)
  • zij / ze = they
  • Use zij for emphasis, ze is more common/neutral.

Examples:

  • Ik woon in Nederland. (I live in the Netherlands.)
  • Hij spreekt Engels. (He speaks English.)
  • Zijn jullie studenten? (Are you (plural) students?)
  • Waar woont u? (Where do you (formal) live?)
