Introduction: Counting Higher

At A1 level, you learned numbers up to 100. Now, let's expand to larger numbers, focusing on hundreds and thousands, which are essential for prices, years, quantities, and more.

Hundreds (honderd)

• 100: honderd (or eenhonderd - less common unless needed for clarity)
• Forming Hundreds: Combine the number (2-9) with honderd.
• 200: tweehonderd
• 300: driehonderd
• 400: vierhonderd
• 500: vijfhonderd
• 600: zeshonderd
• 700: zevenhonderd
• 800: achthonderd
• 900: negenhonderd

• Combining Hundreds with Tens and Units: Add the number below 100 directly after the hundred. Notice there is no "and" (en) directly after honderd.
• 101: honderdeen (or honderdeneen)
• 110: honderdtien
• 125: honderdvijfentwintig (100 + 25)
• 256: tweehonderdzesenvijftig (200 + 56)
• 589: vijfhonderdnegenentachtig (500 + 89)
• 999: negenhonderdnegenennegentig (900 + 99)

• Writing: Numbers up to 1000 are often written as one word in Dutch. tweehonderdzesenvijftig.

Thousands (duizend)

• 1000: duizend (or eenduizend)
• Forming Thousands: Combine the number (2-999) with duizend.
• 2000: tweeduizend
• 3000: drieduizend
• 10.000: tienduizend
• 25.000: vijfentwintigduizend
• 100.000: honderdduizend

• Combining Thousands with Hundreds, Tens, Units: Place the number below 1000 after the duizend part. Again, no "and" between duizend and the rest.
• 1001: duizendeen
• 1100: duizendhonderd (or elfhonderd - see below)
• 1234: duizendtweehonderdvierendertig (1000 + 234)
• 2023: tweeduizenddrieëntwintig (2000 + 23)
• 5678: vijfduizendzeshonderdachtenzeventig (5000 + 678)
• 10.500: tienduizendvijfhonderd (10,000 + 500)
• 125.670: honderdvijfentwintigduizendzeshonderdzeventig (125,000 + 670)

• Writing: Larger numbers often use a period (.) as a thousands separator (opposite of English comma). 1.234, 10.500, 125.670. They are generally written as one word when spelled out fully, though spaces might be used for very large numbers for readability.

Saying Years

Years are typically read differently from cardinal numbers, especially those between 1100 and 1999, and from 2000 onwards.

• Years 1100-1999: Often read as hundreds.
• 1100: elfhonderd
• 1492: veertienhonderd tweeënnegentig (14 hundred 92)
• 1984: negentienhonderd vierentachtig (19 hundred 84)
• 1999: negentienhonderd negenennegentig (19 hundred 99)
• Year 2000: tweeduizend
• Years 2001 onwards: Read as standard cardinal numbers.
• 2001: tweeduizend een
• 2010: tweeduizend tien
• 2023: tweeduizend drieëntwintig
• 2024: tweeduizend vierentwintig
• Years before 1100: Read as standard cardinal numbers.
• 1066: duizend zesenzestig

Millions and Billions (Recognition)

While less critical for A2 active use, recognize these:

• 1.000.000: een miljoen
• 2.000.000: twee miljoen
• 1.000.000.000: een miljard

Note: Miljoen and miljard are separate words.

• drie miljoen euro (three million euros)
• vijf miljard mensen (five billion people)

Examples

• Dit boek kost ë 12,50 (twaalf euro vijftig).
• Dit huis kost ë 350.000 (driehonderdvijftigduizend euro).
• Nederland heeft ongeveer 17.000.000 (zeventien miljoen) inwoners.
• Ik ben geboren in 1995 (negentienhonderd vijfennegentig).
• De cursus begint in 2025 (tweeduizend vijfentwintig).
• De afstand is 450 (vierhonderdvijftig) kilometer.
• Er waren 1500 (vijftienhonderd / duizend vijfhonderd) mensen op het feest.

Building higher numbers involves combining honderd and duizend with the numbers you already know. Remember the lack of "and" after the hundred/thousand mark and the one-word writing convention. Pay special attention to the common way of reading years, especially using "hundreds" for 1100-1999. Practice reading and saying prices, years, and quantities you encounter.
