Introduction

Expressing your opinion (mening) and explaining why (reden) you think that way are fundamental communication skills. This involves using specific verbs and conjunctions.

Expressing Your Opinion (Mening Uiten)

Common verbs and phrases to state what you think:

• Ik vind ... (I find / I think ...) - Very common, general-purpose opinion verb.
• Ik vind dit boek interessant. (I find this book interesting.)
• Ik vind dat de film goed was. (I think that the film was good.) - Note: dat clause -> verb was at the end.
• Wat vind jij hiervan? (What do you think of this?)

• Ik denk dat ... (I think that ...) - Used for beliefs, thoughts, or less strong opinions.
• Ik denk dat het morgen gaat regenen. (I think that it is going to rain tomorrow.)
• Zij denkt dat het een goed idee is. (She thinks that it is a good idea.)

• Ik geloof dat ... (I believe that ...) - Often implies stronger belief or faith.
• Ik geloof dat hij eerlijk is. (I believe that he is honest.)

• Volgens mij ... (According to me / In my opinion ...) - Used at the start of a sentence, followed by standard main clause word order (verb second).
• Volgens mij is dit de beste oplossing. (In my opinion, this is the best solution.)
• Volgens mij komt hij te laat. (In my opinion, he is coming too late.)

• Naar mijn mening ... (In my opinion ...) - More formal version of volgens mij.
• Naar mijn mening moeten we wachten. (In my opinion, we should wait.)

• Ik ben van mening dat ... (I am of the opinion that ...) - Formal.
• Ik ben van mening dat we meer moeten investeren. (I am of the opinion that we should invest more.)

Giving Reasons (Redenen Geven)

To explain why you have a certain opinion, use conjunctions that introduce a reason. The most common is omdat.

• omdat (because) - Introduces a subordinate clause (verb at the end).
• Ik vind deze stad leuk, omdat er veel parken zijn. (I like this city because there are many parks.)
• Hij is moe, omdat hij slecht heeft geslapen. (He is tired because he slept poorly.)
• Ik denk dat het een goed plan is, omdat het geld bespaart. (I think it's a good plan because it saves money.)

• want (because / for) - Introduces a main clause (verb in second position). It connects two independent clauses and gives a reason. Less common than omdat for direct reasons in response to "why", but used to link thoughts.
• Ik blijf thuis, want ik ben ziek. (I am staying home, because/for I am sick.) - Note verb ben in second position after want.
• Hij eet veel, want hij heeft honger. (He eats a lot, for he is hungry.)

Comparing omdat and want:

• omdat -> Subordinate clause (verb end): ... omdat ik ziek ben.
• want -> Main clause (verb second): ... want ik ben ziek.

Both mean "because", but omdat is generally preferred when directly stating the reason why. Want feels more like adding an explanation as a separate thought.

Combining Opinion and Reason

• Ik vind Nederlands moeilijk, omdat de woordvolgorde anders is.

(I find Dutch difficult because the word order is different.)

• Volgens mij is hij een goede leraar, omdat hij alles duidelijk uitlegt.

(In my opinion, he is a good teacher because he explains everything clearly.)

• Ik denk dat we moeten gaan, want het wordt laat.

(I think that we should go, because it is getting late.)

• Zij houdt van deze muziek, omdat het haar vrolijk maakt.

(She loves this music because it makes her happy.)

Asking for Opinions and Reasons

• Wat vind je van ...? (What do you think of ...?)
• Wat is jouw mening over ...? (What is your opinion about ...?)
• Ben je het daarmee eens? (Do you agree with that?)
• Waarom vind je dat? (Why do you think that?)
• Waarom denk je dat? (Why do you think that?)

Use phrases like Ik vind..., Ik denk dat..., or Volgens mij... to express your opinion. Provide reasons using the conjunction omdat (followed by verb-at-the-end word order) or sometimes want (followed by main clause word order). Practice giving your opinion on various topics and explaining why you feel that way.
