Focuses on recognizing major holidays and understanding basic associated vocabulary and customs.

  • de cultuur (culture), de traditie (tradition), de gewoonte (custom/habit), het feest (party/festival), de feestdag (holiday/festival day), vieren (to celebrate), de viering (celebration), nationaal (national), officieel (official), vrije dag (day off).
  1. Major Holidays and Festivals (Examples - may vary between NL/BE):
  • New Year: Nieuwjaar (New Year's Day - Jan 1st), Oud en Nieuw/Oudejaarsavond (New Year's Eve - Dec 31st), het vuurwerk (fireworks), de oliebollen (type of doughnut).
  • Carnival: Carnaval (Carnival - mostly in southern NL/BE), verkleden (to dress up), de optocht (parade).
