Functional Skill: Hypothesizing and Speculating (B1)
This B1 skill involves using language to talk about possibilities, make guesses about situations (present, past, or future), and discuss hypothetical scenarios, often when lacking complete certainty.
Scope:
Utilizes modal verbs, conditional structures, and specific adverbs/phrases to express degrees of certainty and possibility.
- Using Modal Verbs:
kunnen
(could/might/may): Expresses possibility or uncertainty.- Example (Present):
Hij kan ziek zijn.
(He could be ill / He might be ill.) - Example (Future):
Het kan morgen regenen.
(It might rain tomorrow.) - Example (Past - with perfect infinitive):
Hij kan de trein gemist hebben.
(He might have missed the train.) zullen
(probably/will likely): Often used for assumptions or predictions about the present or future when there's a degree of likelihood.- Example (Present):
Hij zal nu wel thuis zijn.
(He will likely be home now / He is probably home now.) -wel
often softens the certainty. - Example (Future):
Het zal morgen wel mooi weer worden.
(It will probably be nice weather tomorrow.) moeten
(must be - logical conclusion): Used for strong assumptions based on evidence (less about speculation, more about deduction, but related).- Example:
Het licht is aan. Hij moet thuis zijn.
(The light is on. He must be home.)
- Using Conditional Mood (
zouden
): For hypothetical situations (see also line 4).
- Example:
Wat zou je doen als je de loterij zou winnen?
(What would you do if you won the lottery?) - Example:
Hij zou dat nooit doen.
(He would never do that - speculation about character/hypothetical action)
- Using Adverbs of Probability/Speculation:
misschien
(maybe, perhaps)- Example:
Misschien komt hij later.
(Maybe he will come later.) waarschijnlijk
(probably)- Example:
Hij is waarschijnlijk ziek.
(He is probably ill.) wellicht
(possibly, perhaps - slightly more formal thanmisschien
)- Example:
Wellicht is er een andere oplossing.
(Perhaps there is another solution.) vast
(surely, certainly - expresses strong assumption)- Example:
Dat weet je vast wel.
(You surely know that.) denk ik
(I think - added to a statement to soften it)- Example:
Hij is op vakantie, denk ik.
(He is on holiday, I think.)
- Using Specific Phrases:
Het zou kunnen dat...
(It could be that... - followed by subordinate clause)- Example:
Het zou kunnen dat de winkel al dicht is.
(It could be that the shop is already closed.) Ik vraag me af of...
(I wonder if... - followed by subordinate clause)- Example:
Ik vraag me af of hij komt.
(I wonder if he is coming.) Stel je voor dat...
(Imagine that... - introduces hypothesis)- Example:
Stel je voor dat je kon vliegen.
(Imagine that you could fly.)
Skills Developed (B1):
- Making educated guesses about situations.
- Discussing possible future events or outcomes.
- Talking about hypothetical scenarios.
- Expressing different degrees of certainty (maybe, probably, surely).
- Understanding when others are speculating rather than stating facts.
Learning Focus:
- Mastering the speculative uses of
kunnen
,zullen
, andzouden
. - Learning key adverbs (
misschien
,waarschijnlijk
,vast
,wellicht
). - Practicing fixed phrases (
Het zou kunnen dat...
,Ik vraag me af of...
). - Paying attention to word order changes with these structures (e.g., inversion after initial adverbs, subordinate clause word order).
