Introduction: Looking to the Future

Talking about your hopes (hopen), dreams (dromen), and ambitions (ambities) for the future is a common topic in conversations. At B1, you can express these using specific verbs and structures.

Expressing Hope (Hoop uitdrukken)

• Using the verb hopen:
• Ik hoop dat... (I hope that...)
• Ik hoop dat het mooi weer wordt morgen. (I hope the weather will be nice tomorrow.)
• Ik hoop dat je slaagt voor je examen. (I hope you pass your exam.)
• Ik hoop [iets] te [doen] (I hope to do [something]) - Uses te + infinitive
• Ik hoop je snel te zien. (I hope to see you soon.)
• Ik hoop volgend jaar op vakantie te gaan. (I hope to go on holiday next year.)
• Hopelijk... (Hopefully...)
• Hopelijk komt alles goed. (Hopefully, everything will turn out okay.)

Word Order: After Ik hoop dat..., use subordinate clause word order (verb at the end). When using hopen te..., te precedes the infinitive.

Talking About Dreams (Over dromen praten)

• Using the verb dromen:
• Ik droom ervan om... te... (I dream of doing...) - Combines with pronominal adverb ervan and om...te...
• Ik droom ervan om een eigen bedrijf te starten. (I dream of starting my own company.)
• Zij droomt ervan om de wereld rond te reizen. (She dreams of travelling around the world.)
• Mijn droom is om... te... (My dream is to...)
• Mijn droom is om vloeiend Nederlands te spreken. (My dream is to speak fluent Dutch.)
• Een droom van mij is... (A dream of mine is...)
• Een droom van mij is een boek schrijven. (A dream of mine is writing a book.)
• dromen over: to dream about (literal sleep dreams, but sometimes figuratively)
• Vannacht droomde ik over vliegen. (Last night I dreamed about flying.)

Describing Ambitions (Ambities beschrijven)

• Using the noun de ambitie:
• Ik heb de ambitie om... te... (I have the ambition to...)
• Ik heb de ambitie om manager te worden. (I have the ambition to become a manager.)
• Mijn ambitie is... (My ambition is...)
• Mijn ambitie is om een positieve bijdrage te leveren. (My ambition is to make a positive contribution.)
• Using the adjective ambitieus:
• Ik ben (erg) ambitieus. (I am (very) ambitious.)
• Using willen (to want) - Strong desire/goal:
• Ik wil graag... bereiken/worden/doen. (I would like to achieve/become/do...)
• Ik wil graag promotie maken. (I would like to get a promotion.)
• Zij wil dokter worden. (She wants to become a doctor.)
• Using future tenses (zullen, gaan): Indicating plans that reflect ambition (see Chapter 3).
• Ik ga volgend jaar een masteropleiding volgen. (I am going to follow a master's program next year.)
• Wij zullen ons bedrijf uitbreiden. (We will expand our company.)

Expressing Wishes (Wensen uitdrukken)

Wishes are closely related to hopes and dreams.

• Using willen:
• Ik wil (graag)... (I want / would like...)
• Ik wil graag een nieuwe fiets. (I would like a new bike.)
• Using wensen (to wish - more formal or specific contexts):
• Ik wens je veel succes! (I wish you lots of success!) - Common fixed expression
• Hij wenste dat hij meer tijd had. (He wished that he had more time.) - Often uses past tense/conditional for unreal wishes.
• Using Conditional zouden: Often expresses a wish, especially with graag.
• Ik zou graag op vakantie willen. (I would love to go on holiday.)
• Ik zou willen dat... (I would like that... / I wish that... - expresses a stronger wish, often about something difficult to achieve)
• Ik zou willen dat het weekend was! (I wish it were the weekend!) - Requires conditional/past tense in the dat-clause for unreal wishes.

Expressing hopes, dreams, and ambitions involves verbs like hopen, dromen, and willen, often combined with dat-clauses, (om...) te + infinitive, or the pronominal adverb ervan (dromen ervan). The conditional zouden is frequently used for expressing wishes (Ik zou graag...). Using these structures allows you to talk about your future aspirations and desires at a B1 level.
